Research collaboration / Clear boundaries from the start

Agree how the research is shared before it leaves your team.

A collaboration should make the scientific question easier to investigate while keeping access, ownership and permitted use clear. Start with a nonconfidential outline; sensitive material can follow an agreed scope and handling plan.

What to share in the first conversation

Describe the target or biological objective, the decision you need to make and the kind of expertise or capability you want to explore. An initial inquiry does not need private datasets, patient information or unpublished structures.

The terms to settle before confidential work

Before confidential work begins, the evaluation should specify the following.

  • Inputs and access · What material is needed, who can access it and which environment will handle it.
  • Use and reuse · How inputs, generated outputs and reusable methods may be used during and after the engagement.
  • Ownership and commercial rights · The treatment of existing intellectual property, project results, licensing and publication.
  • Retention and export · What is retained, what can be exported and how the agreed handling requirements will be verified.

Controls for the environment you will use

The 8DB foundation includes governance and encryption mechanisms. The controls available for a particular deployment, access path and workflow must be established for that engagement. We discuss requirements alongside scientific scope.

A scope both teams can assess

A focused scope can state the question, permitted inputs, expected deliverables and evidence needed for the next decision. That gives scientific and commercial teams something concrete to assess together.
